STATEMENT OF TEXAS’ CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 35 CANDIDATE JOHN LIRA REGARDING COURT DECISION ON TEXAS’ REDRAWN CONGRESSIONAL MAP
San Antonio, TX - John Lira, Marine Corps veteran and candidate for Texas’s newly redrawn 35th Congressional District, issued the following statement on today's court decision regarding today’s ruling by a three-judge federal panel in El Paso.
“Today’s ruling is a reminder that politicians don’t get to pick their voters. Texans do. This is a step toward fair maps and government that respects the will of the people.
While we celebrate this ruling, we recognize the fight is not over. Texas is expected to appeal this decision directly to the U.S Supreme Court. This means the ultimate fate of Texas’s map will be decided by the highest court in the land. My commitment remains unwavering: we will continue to show up, organize, and fight for fair maps that ensure every voter has a voice.
Nobody asked for these maps. Our communities did not want them. Our goal has always been to ensure that every neighborhood, every family, and every voter has a real voice in the democratic process. That mission has not changed.
I’m happy that the court saw through the racial gerrymandering that has taken place in Texas. Nobody wanted these maps; we didn’t want these maps.
However, the lines are drawn, my community in Southeast San Antonio is not a bargaining chip on a political map. We are veterans, working families, and young people who deserve real representation, not to be divided and diminished for someone else’s political power/gain.”
John Lira is available for media interviews. Please contact Juan Rodriguez at 312-771-0263 and juan@liraforcongress.com.
