STATEMENT OF TEXAS’ CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT 35 CANDIDATE JOHN LIRA REGARDING THE SHOOTING OF TWO NATIONAL GUARD MEMBERS IN WASHINGTON DC
San Antonio, TX - John Lira, Marine Corps veteran and candidate for Texas’s newly redrawn 35th Congressional District, issued the following statement on today's National Guard shooting in Washington, DC. .
“Today we learned that members of our National Guard were shot while standing watch for the rest of us. My heart is with them, their families, and their fellow guardsmen tonight.
As a marine veteran, I know the quiet courage it takes to put on that uniform and step into harm's way. No one should have to fear being shot at while serving their community here at home.
To every guard member and servicemember reading this: We see you, we value you, and we will keep fighting to make sure you have the support, resources, and respect you deserve.”

A fourth-generation Mexican American from San Antonio’s Southeast Side, Lira enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at 17 and served 11 years, including two deployments to Iraq.
